Usage of steroids is not a crime in the UK

Officials of the UK will be not capable to stop sportspeople importing steroids to the UK, when they come to take part in the 2012 London Olympics. However application of steroids is prohibited in sports, personal administration of these drugs is legal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is claimed to be illegal in this country. So, if a person attempts to import amount of anabolic steroids which is evidentially large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympics took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries changed legislation linked with import and usage of steroids at least temporally. But the British government refuses to modify steroid legislation for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Ironically, however the government of the UK refuses to make personal usage of steroids illicit, Britain sportspeople are banned for lifetime, if they apply anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, sportspeople that take forbidden preparations are banned for 2 years.
The Olympic minister Hugh Robertson confirms that it is needed to have a universal law linked with sentencing. This minister insists on at least 4 years or even longer.  Although he is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t support such harsh sanction. The CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency Andi Parkinson thinks that some sanctions must be milder.
Hugh Robertson admits that there are different points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for the minister has claimed that any sportsperson can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she arrives to London. But the quantity of steroids must demonstrate that he/she has them just for self-administration. The spokesman has noted that it is not criminal for an athlete to apply steroids under laws of the UK but if any athlete is caught administering forbidden preparations, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD stated that they would collaborate with border control officials. Information about sportspersons will be utilized by anti-doping officers.
5, 000 drug tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee. 1, 000 of these tests will be blood tests.
